Wheel of Time (2003)

Wheel of Time is a 2003 documentary film by German director Werner Herzog about Tibetan Buddhism. The title refers to the Kalachakra sand mandala that provides a recurring image for the film.

The film documents the two Kalachakra initiations of 2002, presided over by the fourteenth Dalai Lama. The first, in Bodhgaya India, was disrupted by the Dalai Lama's illness. Later that same year, the event was held again, this time without disruption, in Graz Austria. The film's first location is the Bodhgaya, the site of the Mahabodhi Temple and the Bodhi tree. Herzog then turns to the pilgrimage at Mount Kailash. The film then focuses on the second gathering in Graz.

Herzog includes a personal interview with the Dalai Lama, as well as Tibetan former political prisoner Takna Jigme Zangpo, who served 37 years in a Chinese prison for his support of the International Tibet Independence Movement.

In Pilgrimage, nameless worshippers crawl stoically towards a goal we never see. Shots of Mexicans on their knees are substituted by images of people kneeling in Russia in a transition that remains unannounced. Attentive viewers will notice that the Siberian footage of pilgrims has been taken from Bells from the Deep. The music for this film was written by the contemporary British composer John Tavener.

Julianes Sturz in den Dschungel ( Wings of Hope) (2000)

A rather amazing, harrowing and inspirational documentary from Werner Herzog about a 1971 plane crash in a South American jungle. A plane loaded with 92 passengers crashed in this jungle and only a seventeen-year-old woman survived. This woman, Juliane Koepcke, had to fight her way through the jungle before being found twelve days after the crash. Herzog takes this woman back to the scene of the crash and they hike through the jungle showing us the paths she took to live. This is a brilliant documentary that has a claustrophobic feel because it's simply amazing that this woman would survive the crash and it's even more amazing that she'd be able to find her way out of this jungle. Another curious note is that Herzog himself was getting ready to film Aguirre, the Wrath of God and was going to take this same flight but it was sold out. Seeing the woman going through the wreck site was also fascinating but depressing considering all the things we see.

A documentary investigation of Russian mysticism. The first half of the film is concerned primarily with a Russian faith healer and a Jesus impersonator - one of many found by the crew in their quest for the right "Jesus". Herzog uses primarily interviews with Russians and scenes from the religious services of the two Holy men. Herzog also has several segments on the religion of Siberian nomads. The second half of the film is concerned with the legend of the lost city of Kitezh. This myth is about a city that was in peril of being destroyed by marauding Mongols, but whose citizens prayed for rescue. Hearing their prayers, God placed the city at the bottom of a deep lake, where it resides to this day. Some even say that one can hear the bells from the city's church. The story is recounted by a local priest and pilgrims visiting the lake.
The English overdub to the Russian language interviews and the narration are provided by Herzog himself.

The story of Gesualdo in and of itself could have made for a terrifying, awesome bio-pic from Herzog, but hearing the history anyway is fascinating enough. The composer of concertos was a Don in Italy, who in between composing his strange harmonies killed his first wife and child, and lived in exile for many years, including the last few of his life. There is the usual scholarly type who gives information about his life, but then there are also local historians, locals of the area, chefs, caretakers, and the buildings where he once lived and held his grand, renaissance-era parties and gatherings. The climax of the film- a celebration out in the streets, is something to see. It's not a long film at one hour, but it's worth the view.

Lessons of Darkness (1992)

This film shows the disaster of the Kuwaitian oil fields in flames. In contrast to the common documentary film there are no comments and few interviews. What must have been the hell itself is presented to the viewer in such beautiful sights and beautiful music that one has to be fascinated by it.

Description: Jag Mandir, sometimes known by its subtitle, The Eccentric Private Theatre of the Maharaja of Udaipur (German: Das excentrische Privattheater des Maharadscha von Udaipur), is a 1991 documentary film directed for television by Werner Herzog. The bulk of the film consists of footage of an elaborate theatrical performance for the Maharana Arvind Singh Mewar at the City Palace of Udaipur, Rajasthan staged by André Heller.

The film was made at Heller's request. Heller explains in the film that he sent several colleagues throughout India to find performers for the show, including dancers, musicians, contortionists, and magicians. About 10,000 performers were located, and of these about 2,000 were chosen to appear in the show, which lasted several hours on a single day. Herzog's footage was filmed at the actual show, with some segments filmed in the rehearsals in the previous days.

Herzog's narration explains that the event was requested of the Maharana by a local wise man who saw the sinking of the city's palaces into the river as a sign that the local culture was deteriorating, and that the Maharana needed to stage the performance to reinvigorate interest in the various cultures represented. This story was invented by Herzog for the film, to "put it all into some context." The city's palaces are not actually sinking into the river."

Dark Glow of the Mountains is a TV documentary made in 1984 by German filmmaker Werner Herzog. It is about an expedition made by the genuinely legendary freestyle mountain climber Reinhold Messner and his partner Hans Kammerlander to climb Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II - two of the world's most difficult peaks - all in one trip without returning to base camp. The film is not so much concerned with showing the climb itself or giving guidelines on mountaineering, but seeks to reveal the inner motivation of the climbers.

This is a beautiful jewel of a film that delivers so much more than one would expect and has quite rightly been described as one of Herzog's greatest works.

"Ballad of the Little Soldier" is the record of another Herzog journey, this time to northeastern Nicaragua to the territory of the Miskito Indians, the former allies of the Sandinistas in the revolution against the Somoza regime, but who are now engaged in their own war against the Sandinistas. Originally persecuted by the Somoza Government, the Miskitos joined the revolution in the fond hope of obtaining their own freedom and some sort of guarantee for their culture.

Once in power in Managua, however, the Sandinistas set about to bring the Miskitos into the "new" society. In theory, this meant moving the Miskitos to centralized communities where they would have access to the amenities of civilization. In fact, though, the Government's campaign resulted in the Miskitos being ruthlessly uprooted, their villages destroyed, their crops burned, their livestock butchered and the systematic massacre of all recalcitrants - men, women and children.

Now, apparently equipped by the Central Intelligence Agency, the Miskitos have put together a crack commando troop, about half of whom are boys 10 to 12 years old, trained by former members of the Somoza regime's notorious National Guard. Early in "Ballad of the Little Soldier," Mr. Herzog and his crew accompany a small band of Indian commandos on a raid into Sandinista territory, which, as so often happens in a Herzog film, comes to nothing when the raiders are spotted by Government troops.

Most of the film is composed of interviews in refugee camps with the Miskitos, who tell their first-person narratives of torture and murder with a terrible, placid stoicism. Mr. Herzog, a political skeptic whose initial sympathies, I assume, were with the revolution, records all this with unsentimental sorrow. ''I can't believe,'' he says at one point, ''that the Sandinistas intended this to happen.'' Elsewhere he has been quoted as saying he's convinced the Sandinista Government must collapse, though whether because of its own excesses or outside intervention is not clear.

The most moving moment in the film comes when Mr. Herzog's assistant director, Denis Reichle, after listening to the testimony of 10- and 12- year-old boy commandos who express their willingness to fight the good fight and to die, recalls that this was just the sort of thing he heard in Germany in the last days before the fall of Hitler, when the Nazis were recruiting boys into the army.

"Ballad of the Little Soldier" is not a rabble-rousing film. It's both a lament about the idiotic state or the world and a song in praise of the human spirit.

The geologist Lance Hackett is employed by an Australian mining company to map the subsoil of a desert area covered with ant hills prior to a possible uranium extraction. His work is impeded by some aborigines who explain that this is the place where the green ants dream. Disturbing their dreaming will destroy humanity they claim. Hackett informs the company which offers various "solutions" such as a large amount of money or a percentage of a possible revenue. Invited on a trip to a city some of the aborigines sees a military aeroplane and express the wish to own it. The company buys it and gives it to the aborigines as a sign of good will. A runway is made in the desert and the plane is flown to the location. All negotiations concerning the area fail and the dispute goes to a court of the Commonwealth. Parties and experts are heard, obstacles are met such as an aborigine who is the sole survivor of his tribe (and language) and therefore no-one understands what he is saying. Two of the aborigines take off in the plane despite that there is very little fuel left. The mining company wins legally and the aborigines morally. Some aborigines arrives from the mountains and tells about a big winged ant that had fallen from the sky.

God's Angry Man, a 44-minute documentary on Dr. Gene Scott of the nightly Festival of Faith, is great. It focuses on Gene Scott's three decades as a broadcaster during which he attracted a large number of viewers for whom his program was never intended — what we generally call a cult following — and his cross-section of fans were legion, if not exactly ready to give their hearts to Jesus anytime soon. It’s certainly a testament to the stamina (if not the downright perversity) of anyone if they could endure three to ten hours a night of a visibly enraged man with a fine, snow-white Charlie Rich pompadour and an icy stare hectoring his audience in television land to get on the phone right this minute and empty out their bank accounts to keep his ministry on its feet. And this is by no means an exaggeration. A good deal of Herzog’s 44-minute film is taken up with scenes of Scott live on the air, angrily rifling through pledges from viewers that were just called in — none of which are ever less than three figures — eventually flying into a hardcore Old Testament fury at the foul stinginess of the apostate public when he sees they haven’t coughed up that extra thousand he told them he needed.

La Soufrière is, as Herzog explains, a documentary of an unavoidable catastrophe that didn’t happen. When Herzog learned in 1977 that the volcano, La Soufrière, on the small Caribbean island of Guadaloupe was about to explode and that one man had decided to stay behind, he assembled a small and daring crew and went to interview the man. Once on the evacuated island, Herzog wanders though the empty streets of Guadaloupe’s capital overrun by donkeys and starving dogs. He eventually makes his way, in a feat of either glaring stupidity or daring bravado, to the crater, but is forced to turn back by a plume of toxic fumes. When he does locate the “last man remaining” he finds that there are in fact several men, all homeless and all unafraid of the looming danger.

Herzog's film begins with a brief slow-motion shoot of a ski-jumper floating through the air, mouth wrenched open, imbibing the experience. The moment is perfectly complimented by a somnambulistic ethereal tune by the German group Popol Vuh, long time collaborators with Herzog. The title comes up, followed by the credit: “A film by Werner Herzog.” A second shot shows the Swiss woodcarver Walter Steiner at work, interpreting his art in a strangely disorientating manner. For someone who doesn't know anything about the film, nor anything about Steiner, this is confusing. What are we about to see? A documentary about a primitive artisan, the last of his craft, struggling against modern society? From Herzog this is quite possible. But why the image of the ski-jumper?

In 1972 and 1977 Steiner was the world ski-flying champion, and in 1973 he was placed second. These championships are held approximately every two years. He also won a Gold medal ski-flying for Switzerland in the Winter Olympics. Herzog's film ostensibly covers Steiner's mammoth record-breaking leaps made in Planica, Yugoslavia in March 1974. Here Steiner demolished all competition by achieving a perfect score, a feat never before achieved. Even more remarkably, Steiner handicapped himself by beginning on a lower run than his competition. Furthermore, Steiner equaled the world record jump set on a longer ramp. Steiner's achievement was awesome and Herzog was there to capture the events.

If Walter Steiner had not existed, Werner Herzog would have had to invent him. Steiner is the quintessential Herzog hero, an obsessed individual, so confident in his own abilities that he transcends the human condition, becoming answerable to no one except possibly God. Steiner is partially a Herzog creation, a myth conjured by the filmmaker. For example, the text over the slow-motion image of Steiner, alone, fading into a snowy blankness that serves as the coda for the film reads: “I ought to be all alone in the world. Just me Steiner, and no other living thing. No sun, no culture. Myself, naked on a high rock…. Then at least I wouldn't be afraid.” This final statement was written by Herzog.

The two non-skiing related interviews with Steiner included in the film – the one mentioned above where Steiner describes his work, and another featuring an anecdote wherein Steiner discusses the young, sick raven he had kept as a pet – have a strange, mystical quality, as though there is something profoundly metaphorical in what Steiner is saying and yet, we cannot quite grasp its meaning. Is Steiner comparing his experiences at Planica – where he became the supreme ski-flier – with those of his victimized bird? The mysterious associative logic found here is similar to that located throughout Herzog's other work.

Herzog lets us discover his special universe, a world of misfits with remarkable talents (such as his dwarves, the deaf and mute, Bruno S, Klaus Kinski and Walter Steiner) who are forced to become outsiders in our world. In addition, Herzog allows us to discover his world as the events unfold (the impending eruption of La Soufrière or Steiner's record breaking jumps). It is almost as if Herzog himself is that extra ingredient that makes the magic occur.

In The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner, Herzog plays the naive, awestruck reporter, humbled by the supremacy of the ski-flier. But Herzog is also an intelligent, intuitive filmmaker. By 1974 ski-flying was reaching its limits, a fact acknowledged by Steiner in the film. Herzog states that the genesis of his film was in Steiner's 179-meter jump and subsequent fall at Oberstdorf in 1973. This jump, 10 meters longer than the world record, was at the very extremes of ski-flying, pushing the sport to its most dangerous limits. If Steiner had jumped a further 10 meters he would have landed on a flat surface, experiencing a direct 110 meter fall and certain death. As already noted, by the beginning of 1974, when filming began, Steiner had already won and placed second at the World Ski-flying championship. Steiner was at his prime and was the individual most likely to test the limits of the ski jumps. Having deduced this Herzog began filming Steiner. Initially, at the Schattenberg ramp for the opening jumps of 1974, Steiner performed badly due to injury. According to Herzog, a defeated Steiner was ignored by the spectators. It was only once Steiner competed at Planica that the remarkable occurred.

Apart from Steiner's jump at Oberstdorf in 1973, Herzog doesn't include any details of Steiner's previous skiing career nor that of any of the other ski-jumpers. There is no attempt to contextualise Steiner's achievement. He is portrayed as so determined to fulfill his ambition to fly that he almost metamorphoses – much like Luc Besson's sporty protagonist in The Big Blue (1988), who becomes a dolphin – into a bird. The paucity of factual details makes Steiner's monumental effort at Planica appear to emerge from a vacuum, making it seem even more superhuman. Herzog, the intrepid chronicler of the human experience, carefully builds the myth.

The Great Ecstasy of Woodcarver Steiner is not a fast-food style documentary about a sporting personality, to be viewed once on television and then discarded, nor is it a cinéma-vérité style observational piece, slowly revealing some profound truth. Herzog is more interested in creating an enduring peon to a unique individual. Like a political filmmaker attempting to advance a contentious hypothesis, Herzog amplifies some aspects and ignores others in an attempt to present his case. Herzog's most memorable films have a euphoric effect, making the audience aware of the full potential of life. In the worlds his films create and observe anything is possible and even achievable. For example, a simple craftsman can extend the limits of human existence. In Herzog's oeuvre, this film, like the ski-flying abilities of Walter Steiner, ranks near the very top.

An impressive and moving study primarily of West Germany's young thalidomide victims, Handicapped Future is also one of Herzog's most political films as it compares the treatment of the physically handicapped in the Federal republic to that in the United States. During the films production Herzog encountered Fini Straubinger, who was to feature in 'Land of Silence and Darkness.'

I had been asked to make a documentary about thalidomide victims in West Germany and produced a film called ‘Handicapped Future’. The reason this film is in no way stylized is because, like ‘The Flying Doctors of East Africa’, it was proposed by someone else, in this case by a young man whose very best friend was in a wheelchair. I was asked to do a film on him alone, but after some investigation I felt there was more to the subject and I made ‘Handicapped Future’ – another example of what I call a Gebrauchsfilm [a film for practical use. See also ‘The Flying Doctors of East Africa’ for instance.] – so I could give it to those institutions who take care of the physically handicapped and assist them in raising public awareness of their cause. At the time, treatment of the handicapped was somewhat medieval. For example, in Germany there were very few elevators in public spaces or sidewalks that could be used by wheelchairs. It is probably one of my most directly politically aware films because I wanted to explore the development of legislation emerging from the United States – that later trickled across to Germany and other European countries – which was helping the handicapped minority. The film actually helped trigger a change of awareness of these issues in Germany which led to new legislation. I do not know if I like the film; today it seems dangerously conventional. If I was to make a similar film today it would be much harsher. In pursuit of the deeper truths, I would not shrink back from anything, even when telling such a tragic story.
More importantly, Handicapped Future was somehow a predecessor to ‘Land of Silence and Darkness’ and directly triggered that film. During filming, Schmidt-Reitwein and I went to hear a speech given by Gustav Heinemann, the President of West Germany, where I met Fini. You can actually see on film the first moment I encountered her: it is the scene that appears about halfway through ‘Land of Silence and Darkness’ when she is at the Heinemann talk and her companion is describing what is going on to her through the tactile language they are using. We were filming the President and I turned and saw this man tapping out something on to the hand of the woman sitting next to him. I immediately sensed this was something big that I should take note of, so I gently nudged Schmidt-Reitwein, who slowly moved his camera around and filmed the two of them.

An absolute gem! Something you have to see to believe!

This film isn't just depraved and misanthropic, it's depraved and misanthropic with heart.
Despite it's grotesqueness, it depicts a fantasy of rebellion and transgression that I've loved for years. The urge to break free and destroy the confining objects and circumstances of our lives is within all of us.
The potential joy of trashing and rendering inoperable our cars, the implements of our work, even our foodstuffs and houses lurks somewhere on a subconcious level, wether we are able to admit it to ourselves or not.
Herzog has made an archetypal statement, very simply and unambiguously. The exhilaration of watching these laughing little people dismantle, bludgeon and set fire to their surroundings is immense. The movie is one of those movies that you really should see, but you may in turn regret seeing it. It's a blend of pure joy, violence and overall having a good time with really limited resources.
The movie is insane! There is a lot of animal cruelty involved; crucified monkeys, burning chickens, ... There are also a lot of creepy and unsettling feelings that go along with this movie; some viewers may in fact hate this movie...
It's pure comedy, but the eerie thought of a group of a bunch of dwarfs laughing menacingly at really obscene things is quite unsettling.

Die Fliegenden Ärzte von Ostafrika (English: The Flying Doctors of East Africa) is a 1969 documentary film by Werner Herzog about the "flying doctors" service of the African Medical and Research Foundation in Tanzania, Kenya, and Nairobi. The film is a fairly conventional documentary made during the filming of Herzog's more stylized films "Fata Morgana" and "Even Dwarfs Started Small".

Herzog was asked to make this film by some friends of the doctors themselves. The film consists of factual accounts of the doctors' service, mostly avoiding the surrealism and stylizations that characterize the typical Herzog film. Herzog has said, "I do not even call it a film, it is much more a report." But as has been noted elsewhere, the flying doctors are almost a sideshow. The film focuses on the indigenous tribes' primitive conditions and quirky cultural differences largely avoiding focusing on the actual doctors the film is named after. Their backgrounds - their motivations - their passion for helping these people through great adversity is hardly touched. What Herzog is really interested in is the different ways of seeing and understanding the world which are revealed by the doctors' experiences.

The most vivid example is that of the eye. The doctors tried to use a poster campaign to educate their patients about a fly which carries a parasite that can cause blindness. The message was to keep the flies away from your eyes, however the posters were ineffective because they used a disembodied picture of an eye and the Masai did not understand what the picture was supposed to represent. Asked to point at a picture of an eye they ignore the huge eye on the poster and point at the eye on a picture of a whole person next to it. As Herzog points out, it is we who have lessons to learn from this - about our unthinking arrogance in assuming our own understanding of the world is the only possible one.

This focus ties the film in with much of Herzog's other future works in that it doesn't take a look at the subject in an usual way but instead takes a look at strange things other filmmakers might overlook. A minor work overall but as a precursor to his later films it's fascinating.

A very amusing and curious short from Werner Herzogs early years, including a very funny (and rare) performance by Peter Schamoni. Also, Mario Adorf can be seen in a short but cool supporting role. A must-see.

On Crete, a wounded German paratrooper named Stroszek is sent to the quiet city of Kos with his wife Nora, a Greek nurse, and two other soldiers recovering from minor wounds. Billeted in a decaying fortress, they guard a munitions depot. There's little to do: Becker, a classicist, translates inscriptions on ancient tablets found in the fortress, Meinhart devises traps for cockroaches, Nora helps Stroszek make fireworks using gunpowder from grenades in the depot. Slowly, in the heat and torpor, Stroszek goes mad, drives the others from the fortress, and threatens the city with blowing up the depot. With care, the German command must figure out how to get him down.

Surreal and often very funny, thanks to the constant repetition of the lines of dialog. This is the place where you really can see the Herzog style coming into being. There is wonderful local music, portrait-like shots of the characters and haunting images of the landscape.

Werner Herzog´s first film is mainly a montage of clips showing bodybuilders working out. They´re the new incarnations of Hercules, son of a good and symbol of strength, intelligence and heroism. In inserts they are asked to perform modern herculean deeds, with bomb dropping military jets standing in for the carnivorous birds of Stymphalis or a miles long traffic jam for the nine-headed Hydra. It´s intended as an attack on machismo.
